Biographical Sketch

Education:

Graduate of Pennsylvania State University with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Landscape Architecture (1939)

Family Background in Golf:

The Snyder family has been involved with the game since Jack’s father, Arthur A. Snyder, began caddying at the Oakmont Country Club near Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, in 1907, and then worked on the maintenance crew there for about ten years. Arthur was course superintendent at two Pittsburgh area courses for 26 years and the Paradise Valley Country Club in Paradise Valley, Arizona for 20 years. In February, 1978, he was honored by the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America with the presentation of its Distinguished Service Award, and in January, 1979, he received the United States Golf Association Green Section Award. He was a member of the Arizona Golf Hall of Fame, the only golf course superintendent to be so honored. At 98 years of age, he was the oldest living member of the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America until his passing in 1997.

Jack’s brother, James H. Snyder, is a retired golf course superintendent, and brother Carl H. Snyder is superintendent emeritus at the Boulders Resort and Club at Carefree, Arizona. All three brothers are Class AA-Life Members of the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America.

Other superintendents in Jack’s family are as follows:  his nephew David Snyder is retired but works as a consultant; his nephew Larry Snyder is superintendent at Celebration Golf in Orlando, Fla.; his cousin Arthur A. Snyder II is deceased, but was owner of Agronomic Management Technology, Inc. in Tucson, Ariz. and was superintendent at Tubac Bolf Resort in Tubac, Ariz.; and his son, Michael Snyder, is superintendent at the University of Idaho Golf Course in Moscow, Idaho.

Personal Background in Golf:

Jack Snyder began caddying at the age of ten, and working on the golf course during summer vacations at the age of twelve.

Taught a course in golf course design at Penn State while a member of the senior class.

Golf course superintendent at the Oakmont Country Club near Pittsburgh for two years, and at the White Mountain Country Club at Pinetop, Arizona, for four years.

Responsible for grounds maintenance for Amfac, Inc., for three years at the Kaanapali Resort Project on the Island of Maui, Hawaii, including the 18-hole Royal Kaanapali Golf Course, the parkways, and the airport.

Other Business Experience:

Owned and operated the Arthur J. Snyder Company and Snyder, Incorporated, both landscape architectural design and construction organizations in Pennsylvania, for a period of sixteen years.
